As we welcome a new year, it’s common to look around and feel like your space needs to keep up with this ‘new and improved’ you. Here are our tips for renovating your home to increase livability (and value) in 2023:

1. Create a More Personal and Functional Kitchen:
The appeal of ultra-minimal-all-white kitchens is on its way out with more personalized, earth-toned and bold monochromatic designs taking its place for 2023. A design trend we’ve noticed as we get further into the new year is kitchens that are using more natural materials (like warm woods and bold stones), have less ‘generic’ design features and are multi-use spaces. One of our favourite executions of this is this Vancouver property built by CMGT Construction Group, designed by kree8 Design! We added a folding window across the back wall, acting as a passthrough from the prep space to the outdoor BBQ and patio!

This adds so much personality and functionality to the kitchen! The prep space becomes a space for serving burgers, creating an outdoor bar to sit at, moving large items in easily, and bringing that fresh air in!
2. Blend Indoor-Outdoor Spaces:
On that note… blending indoor and outdoor living spaces has been a huge trend leading into 2023! With more people spending more time at home, creating seamless flowing spaces from living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and patios into one has become really popular (and an awesome value add to any space).
Here are some trending ways to connect your indoor/outdoor spaces:

3. Create More Curves:
A shift from the hyper-modern square edges into contemporary curves, adding rounded corners and curved edges is a great way to add interest, value and an updated look to your home for 2023.
We’ve seen an increase in rounded edges, arches or even curved walls as we’re coming into the new year, with many of our under-construction projects featuring exaggeratedly arched windows and doors:

This beautiful Vancouver project features a custom curved folding door system that is a perfect example of the move toward curved design elements!

4. Upgrade / Create Home Offices:
With WFH going from rare to the new norm, investing in home offices has become one of the leading design trends of the 2020s. What’s new for it in 2023? Renovating garages or sheds into dedicated home offices!
This Seattle couple renovated their garage into a DADU (detached accessory dwelling unit) building - also a very popular architectural trend of the 2020s! - to include an upper level that doubles as a guest house and office right in their backyard:

5. Increase Energy Efficiency:
Between cutting costs and environmentally friendly impacts, increasing energy efficiency is top of mind for homeowners (and home-buyers!) in 2023.
Products are improving to create better energy efficiency across all aspects of design - for windows and doors, Kolbe Windows has been leading this standard for years! With special designs and materials to ensure heat stays in and the elements stay out, we have products with a high-efficiency thermal rating with the thinnest profiles you’ve ever seen.
For example, this VistaLuxe AL bi-parting Multi-Slide door is constructed with an ultra-thin aluminum profile with advanced thermal protection to capture the most amount of this stunning view without letting the wild Whistler elements in.
